How the under-reporting of “Lung Attacks” in Canada impacts patient outcomes in COPD
This discussion paper is the result of a collaborative effort between the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease Association (COPD Canada) and the Family Physician Airways Group of Canada. The purpose of this initiative was to identify existing gaps in care and communication about exacerbations and suggest how they could be bridged. The paper highlights two critical findings with the greatest implications for COPD care:
• The under-reporting of lung attacks, or exacerbations, by patients to their family physicians
• The underestimation by family physicians of the consequences of exacerbations on their patients
